Lochwood VIP (Volunteers In Patrol) Crime Watch

Looking for a great way to spend 60-90 minutes a month contributing to the safety of our neighborhood? Join Lochwood VIP!

Volunteers patrol only once a month for approximately 60-90 minutes a month. Doing more than one patrol is totally optional for each patroller.

VIP is the community crime watch program comprised of your neighbors who patrol in pairs to be on the lookout for suspicious activity. Lochwood Neighborhood was one of the very first neighborhoods in Dallas to join the VIP Crime Watch program years ago, and we saw a nearly 30% reduction in crime the first year, and 20%+ in year two.

Please see the requirements below before applying to see if you qualify.

VIPers may choose their schedule and patrol partner

  • Choose your days and hours to patrol. Typically, you will patrol once a month, about an hour and a half per patrol. Many of our volunteers patrol twice a month, for a total of 3 hours per month.

  • Choose your patrol partner, or your Area Leader can pair you with someone.

Joining VIP involves taking a training/verification class at the DPD NE Station on NW Hwy or at the Lochwood Library. We are trained by the Dallas police, patrol in pairs in our own vehicles, and call 911 if action is warranted. We never get out of our vehicles nor confront anyone who seems suspicious.

Police crime statistics show a very positive correlation between the number of patrols and reduced crime and this has certainly proven true for our neighborhood. Please apply to participate!

VIPs are required to be at least 21 years old, never been convicted of a felony, have no outstanding warrants or tickets, have a valid Texas driver’s license or ID card, have no misdemeanor A or B convictions in the past 5 years, and no DWI convictions in the past 10 years.

All potential volunteers must complete an application, sign a waiver of liability, sign a confidentiality agreement, and pass a criminal background check conducted by the DPD Neighborhood Patrol Unit.
